Koppers Achieves Environmental Certification Worldwide

Company has attained ISO 14001 certification for all manufacturing facilities
PITTSBURGH, February 22, 2005 - Koppers Inc. has achieved ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management Systems (EMS) at all of its manufacturing plants worldwide.
"Koppers maintains an ongoing commitment to the environment, which is recognized by this certification," said Walt Turner, president and CEO of Koppers. "The ISO 14001 standard provides a structure to guide our efforts in continuously improving our environmental protection practices."
Koppers has 33 manufacturing plants in the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia, the Pacific Rim and South Africa that have met the ISO 14001 standard. The plants produce carbon compounds for the aluminum, chemical, steel and rubber industries and treated wood products for utilities, construction firms and railroads.
"Koppers is committed to systematic and sustainable improvement in our environmental programs," said Leslie S. Hyde, Vice President of Safety and Environmental Affairs. "While we will continue our close attention to complying with environmental regulations, the standard provides a methodology to go beyond compliance and develop excellence in our environmental management programs."
In the U.S., ISO 14001 certified manufacturing plants are located in Alorton, Ill., Clairton, Pa., Denver, Colo., Florence, S.C., Follansbee, W.Va., Gainesville, Fla., Galesburg, Ill., Green Spring, W.Va., Grenada, Miss., Guthrie, Ky., Monessen, Pa., Montgomery, Ala., Muncy, Pa., North Little Rock, Ark., Roanoke, Va., Somerville, Texas, Stickney, Ill, Superior, Wis., and Woodward, Ala.
In Europe, certified plants are in Port Clarence and Scunthorpe, UK and Nyborg, Denmark. In Australia, certified plants are located in Grafton, Newcastle and Thornton, New South Wales; Hume, Australian Capital Territory; Takura, Queensland; Longford, Tasmania; and Bunbury, Western Australia. Other plants that have been certified are Koppers Arch Wood Protection plants in Trentham, Victoria, Australia; Port Shepstone, South Africa; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Koppers Continental Carbon operation in Kurnell, New South Wales, Australia.
ISO 14001, established by the International Organization for Standardization, is the world's most recognized EMS framework, used by more than 37,000 organizations in 112 countries.
