PITTSBURGH, February 22, 2005 - The Koppers plant in Somerville, Texas, has achieved ISO 14001 certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS).
"Koppers employees in Somerville made a considerable effort and investment over the past year to achieve this standard," said David A. Shaw, plant manager at Somerville. "Global industries like Koppers have a responsibility to be more environmentally sensitive and today's achievement shows our commitment to that goal."
The Somerville wood treating plant has been owned by Koppers since 1995. The facility produces pressure-treated wood crossties and switch ties for the railroad industry.
"Koppers is committed to systematic and sustainable improvement in our environmental programs," said Leslie S. Hyde, Vice President of Safety and Environmental Affairs. "While we will continue our close attention to complying with environmental regulations, the standard provides a methodology to go beyond compliance and develop excellence in our environmental management programs."
Koppers Inc. has achieved ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management Systems at all of its 33 manufacturing plants. The international standard allows Koppers to implement cost-effective procedures that are applicable worldwide. ISO 14001, established by the International Organization for Standardization, is the world's most recognized EMS framework, used by more than 37,000 organizations in 112 countries.
